Don’t Cut the Roots!
ArborGen Reforestation Advisor Dr. Paul Jeffreys explains that customers should never prune the roots of their seedlings before planting. Our nursery managers spend a lot of time managing the seedling growth in the nursery bed prior to lifting. One process that is used is called undercutting. This process prunes the roots while the seedlings are still in the nursery bed and allows the cut surface to heal, which prevents pathogens from entering the seedlings that could kill them.

Site Prep for Best Results
Appropriate site preparation on a cutover tract or old field site is important before planting pine seedlings. It reduces the woody and herbaceous weed component to facilitate planting. It also controls woody and herbaceous weed competition, so the young seedlings survive and thrive in their first growing season.

Seedling Care and Planting Guidelines
Bare root and containerized tree seedlings must be handled carefully from the time they are harvested at the nursery until they are transplanted in the field. Equally important is planting seedlings correctly. This booklet will tell you how. Proper seedling handing is complicated by the variety of environmental conditions that may occur during this critical time between harvesting and transplanting. Monitor environmental conditions continuously. Adjust field operations as necessary to adhere to these guidelines. By following these standards, you enhance the likelihood of a successful planting. Reforestation costs are the landowner’s primary forestry investment during a timber stand’s life. Good seedling survival sets the stage for the next forest’s productivity and the landowner’s returns on investment. With more and more landowners planting advanced genetics seedlings such as MCP® following these guidelines is especially important.
Planting Density: Less CAN be more!
Reforestation Advisor Jason Cromer discusses the importance of Planting Density and how planting fewer trees-per-acre (TPA) with advanced genetics such as MCP® can actually deliver more revenue than OP control families.
