Price VS Value? Let’s Talk Trucks. And Seedlings!
Suppose you’re in the market for a new truck – and you have two options……
1. Truck A: This truck is priced at $40,000. It’s a regular-sized, no-frills vehicle with basic features, average fuel efficiency, and a shorter warranty. It will do what you want it to do now.
2. Truck B: This truck is priced at $50,000. It’s a larger truck with advanced safety features, excellent fuel efficiency, a longer warranty, heavy-duty hauling, AND a reputation for reliability.
Well, while Truck A is cheaper than Truck B, the extra $10,000 for B offers more value by providing enhanced safety, better performance, and a greater peace of mind due to its reliability and warranty.
Do you want to pay more now to have everything you want and need? Or hope what you have will be what you need?
Just like pickup trucks, there are different tree seedlings for various purposes and objectives.
If you want trees for habitat or pulpwood (and not any other type of wood product), then regular, baseline Open Pollinated (OP) seedlings might be ok.

If you want to make more money at final harvest, investing a little more in seedlings like MCP® will get you trees that are straighter, taller, and more disease resistant – perfect for sawtimber and telephone poles.

Here’s How it Works
For example, if you plant 10 acres of OP Advanced at a seedling cost of $66/1000 seedlings, your total revenue (1st thinning and final harvest) would be $21,115.
However, If you plant that same 10 acres with MCP® at a seedling cost of $165/1000 seedlings, your revenue would be $31,712.
That means for the addition investment of $599, the additional return from that investment would be $10,598! Or in other words, by planting MCP the incremental return per $1 is $18 in this example.
